Alabama's Back To School Sales Tax Holiday Begins July 19

Alabamians get some sales tax relief for back-to-school items this weekend, starting Friday, July 19.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Friday, July 19 begins a weekend of sales tax exemption for Alabamians shopping for back-to-school supplies, clothing and other items. The sales tax "holiday" lasts through July 21.

During this time, selected items for back-to-school needs will be sales tax-exempt - although in some areas, local tax may apply.

While most state municipalities are participating, some are not (see the complete list of participants here). The localities near the Birmingham metro not participating in the sales tax holiday are:
