Birmingham City Schools Will Postpone Start Date To September

Birmingham City Schools will begin the 2020-21 school year in September, as teachers and principals prepare for virtual learning.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — In preparation for the coming school year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Birmingham City Schools have pushed back the start to the school year once again. School will begin Sept. 9 as opposed to August 24.

Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan said extra time was needed to distribute electronic devices to students as the system begins the school year with a virtual learning platform. Sullivan said when the system opted for the at-home platform that students would be given electronic devices for classwork, and hot spots would be provided for families who do not have access to internet.

"This is going to be an exciting, yet unprecedented year of teaching and learning in Birmingham City Schools," Sullivan said. "Our team has been working throughout the summer to get the resources in place for the start of the academic year. We also have made an aggressive push to encourage families to register."

Sullivan said teachers in the system began the process of training for virtual learning platforms in March and will continue to be trained throughout the semester.

Meal service will still be available for students on a drive-thru basis. "All of our schools will have cafeteria services," Sullivan said. "Do drive-bys as we did when we started this practice in March."
