The Birmingham Police Department reports investigators are conducting an Officer Involved Shooting Investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, June 14, 2021.

At approximately 7:00 p.m., officers from East Precinct observed a pick up truck traveling on the wrong side of the road in the 9100 block of Parkway East. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop and the suspect stopped at Tienda Y Taqueria Mexican Restaurant in the 8500 block of 1st Avenue North. The suspect exited the vehicle and fled inside the restaurant. Officers pursued the suspect into the restaurant. The suspect began to throw glass bottles at the officers.

The officers responded by deploying their Conducted Electrical Weapons (Tasers) at the suspect. A physical altercations ensued and the suspect gained control of one of the officer’s tasers. During the confrontation officers discharged their firearms striking the suspect. The suspect continued to fight officers before ultimately collapsing.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the location and transported the suspect to UAB Hospital with life threatening injuries. The suspect injuries have been listed as stable but critical. Officers did not sustained injuries that required medical attention. There were no injuries to patrons or staff at the establishment.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will be the lead investigative agency in this officer involved shooting investigation. Further updates will be provided by ALEA.
