Birmingham Ranks Among Cities With The Lowest Credit Scores
A recent study on average credit scores in U.S. cities shows Birmingham among the bottom 5 percent.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — With tax season approaching, attention turns to personal finances throughout the country, and a recent study shows that Birmingham residents may not be very credit-worthy on average.
The personal-finance website WalletHub analyzed the median credit scores of residents in 2,572 cities and recently released its report on 2021's Cities with the Highest & Lowest Credit Scores. The median credit score in Birmingham is 637, which falls into the Fair category and ranks in the 5th percentile relative to all other cities.
In order to identify the cities with the highest and lowest credit scores, WalletHub compared the median credit scores of residents in each of 2,572 U.S. cities as of September 2020, based on TransUnion data. A rank of “1” corresponds with the city with the highest credit score. In determining its sample, WalletHub considered only the city proper in each case and excluded cities in the surrounding metro area.
