Birmingham Weather: Strong To Severe Storms Possible Wednesday
Another system of heavy storms is expected to sweep over Alabama Wednesday, which could bring some severe weather to Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — In a forecast that seems like clockwork this spring for Alabama, a mid-week storm system is expected to roll through the state Wednesday that culd bring with it some severe weather.
Meteorologist James Spann said Wednesday's weather will include heavy rain and a slight risk of severe storms.
"Clouds will increase across Alabama today ahead of a cold front; a few showers will likely develop this afternoon and tonight," Spann said Tuesday. "Then, on Wednesday, thunderstorms just ahead of the front could become strong to severe. I would imagine much of the state will be in a marginal or slight risk."

The main threat with the line of thunderstorms Wednesday will be strong, potentially damaging winds, Spann said. What makes these thunderstorms particularly hazardous is that the ground is still wet from storms that hit the state last week and over the weekend.
"Pay attention to severe thunderstorm warnings, since strong winds could easily knock down trees with the saturated soil conditions we have across Alabama," Spann said. "Some small hail is also possible with the heavier thunderstorms. A brief, isolated tornado is possible in spots, but not especially likely. Rain amounts of around one inch are likely."

Another aspect of the weather system is an unseasonal cold front that will follow the rain. Once the front passes, temperatures will fall quickly through the 50s and into the upper 40s with a brisk north wind.
