Gov. Ivey Surveys Damage From Fultondale Tornado
Gov. Kay Ivey visited Jefferson County Wednesday to survey damage from the EF3 tornado that hit Fultondale and Center Point Monday.

FULTONDALE, AL — Gov. Kay Ivey came to Jefferson County Wednesday to survey damage from Monday night's EF3 tornado that hit Fultondale and Center Point. Dozens of injuries were reported and the tornado claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy.
Ivey was able to get a complete view of the aftermath of the tornado via helicopter Wednesday morning, as she saw the damage to the homes and businesses in the community and the destruction of Fultondale High School.
Ivey said state leaders are working with Jefferson County leaders on how to help the 650 displaced students and where and how they will attend school in the meantime.

"The people of Alabama are praying for y’all this morning and we are here as a sign of our commitment to your recovery," Ivey said. "Alabama is no stranger to the damage Mother Nature is capable of handing out,’' she said. “Just last year we experience several tropical storms and extremely powerful hurricanes that caused hundreds of millions in damage to our gulf coast and displaced thousands of citizens. During that time, I acted swiftly to ensure that local leaders and residents received the resources they desperately needed during such an unfortunate time and I assure all of you that what’s happened here in Fultondale will be treated with the same urgency and care."
Ivey also added her condolences to the family of Elliott Hernandez, the Fultondale High School ninth grader killed in the storm.

"Homes and businesses can be rebuilt," Ivey said. "But losing a young soul to a storm like this is beyond heartbreaking."
More than 250 Alabama Power customers lost service in the tornado, according to a report from the company. At sunrise, Alabama Power was closely coordinating with local emergency management organizations with crews mobilizing to restore power quickly and safely. The company is actively assessing and repairing damage to the company’s transmission and distribution structures in Fultondale and other affected areas.
Although his crews remain on site, Fultondale Fire Chief Justin McKenzie said rescue teams have accounted for all of the residents in the path of the storm.
Gov. Kay Ivey has set up the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund where people can donate to those most affected by the storm.
