Greater Birmingham Humane Society Seeks Foster Homes For Hurricane Harvey Pets
The Greater Birmingham Humane Society needs foster homes and donations while they find homes for animals displaced by Hurricane Harvey.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Even though Hurricane Harvey is wreaking havoc a few states away, the Greater Birmingham Humane Society is stepping in to help animals in danger. Group of GBHS volunteers have gone out to areas affected by flooding in Louisiana and Texas to pick up animals that local shelters can't keep, and will bring them back to Birmingham to find them forever homes.
"Even though we are stretched here, the situation in Texas and Louisiana is much more horrible," GBHS said in a Facebook post. "If you have EVER considered the idea of fostering a dog, now is the time to contact us."
Katie Beck, GBHS director of public relations, said one group returned Tuesday morning with 42 dogs that will soon be bathed, vetted and spayed or neutered in preparation for adoption. In the meantime, the shelter is in need of foster homes to house the dogs until they are officially adopted, as well as several items to accommodate the new additions: dog food, dog collars of varying size, leashes, toys, blankets, dog crates, Ziplock bags and rolled newspapers.
