Improper Food Temperature, Dirty Restrooms: January Health Scores

Seven local eateries scored an 85 or below in their January health inspection from the Jefferson County Department of Health.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL — More than 200 Jefferson County restaurants were inspected by the Jefferson County Department of Health in January, and seven of those eateries were given a score of 85 or below.

The most common infractions were improper food temperatures, and restroom issues ranging from cleanliness to needed repairs.

Leeds Coosa Mart; 7680 Parkway Drive, Leeds (69): Points were deducted for failure to provide clean-up procedures for employees to follow when responding to vomiting or diarrheal events in a food establishment; failure to store employee food and personal drinks in a designated area below and away from food, utensils, equipment, linens, and unwrapped single service/single use articles; failure to maintain food at proper temperature; approved food contact surface sanitizer, such as regular chlorine bleach, is not available in storage in the store nor in its retail stock; air temperature gauge on the pizza hot holding case is broken or inaccurate; solution for between-use storage of wet wiping cloths at the self-service counter tested negative for chlorine; no hot water supplied to the handsink in the men's restroom, and no water supplied to the handsink in the women's restroom.

Domino's Pizza; 445 Main Street, Trussville (76): Points were deducted because employee handled his telephone and touched his body, then put on gloves to work with food without washing hands, another handled his mobile phone repeatedly, then folded pizza boxes without washing his hands; food safety training records could not be provided; foodhandler with wristwear; failure to post current permit in public view; food particles, residues, and debris on the pizza oven conveyor racks; air temperature thermometer could not be located inside the pizza make table cooler; food thermometer, which initially could not be located, was later found on the floor in the office behind boxes under the desk; soiled pizza pans found stored in the sink; automatic air curtain installed on the outer opening is not working; unshielded bulbs in the uncovered light fixture in the rear prep and warewashing area.

Laquinta Inn; 513 Cahaba Park Circle, Birmingham (75): Points were deducted for failure to post current inspection report in a conspicuous place; failure to maintain food at proper temperature; sink is not connected to drain to the sewerage system and the establishment does not have warewashing equipment functioning for cleaning and sanitizing of repeat-use utensils and equipment; failure to provide an appropriate, readily accessible thermometer for verifying internal food temperatures; dried food spills on the lower interior of the RI cooler in the breakfast area work room; boxes of disposables on the floor in the breakfast area work room and in the storage room on the 2nd floor; accumulations of construction debris and cast-off items on the rear exterior premises.

Logan's Roadhouse; 5083 Pinnacle Square, Trussville (81): Points were deducted for failure to maintain food at proper temperature; no irreversible thermometer at the time of the regular inspection; soiled microwave ovens; condensation leak in RI cooler holding plates; damaged floor tiles throughout the facility; dirty vent cover in men's restroom.

Kings Wings; 1100 Forestdale Blvd., Birmingham (85): Points were deducted because a manager was not present at the time of inspection; chili stored in WI cooler not date marked; improper storage of ice scoop; metal scoop use for sugar contaminated; damaged door gaskets on WI cooler and Freezer unit.

Domino's Pizza; 2446 Old Springville Road, Trussville (85): Points were deducted for failure to provide food safety training for all food handlers as required; failure to maintain food at proper temperature; soiled fan vent cover in WI cooler; clean dishes stored on dirty shelves next to 3 compartment sink; failure to keep dumpster doors and lids closed; dirty floor under dough prep area.

Graysville Stop N Shop; 12 Second Ave. SW, Birmingham (85): Points were deducted for a soiled ice machine; dirty microwave ovens; empty buckets and leaf blower in sink; no tissue paper for outside unisex restroom; water leak at mop sink; dumpster doors and lids open; water stained ceiling tiles.
