JeffCo School Board Member Apologizes For Social Media Posts

Jefferson County School Board member Donna Pike is apologizing for social media posts

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Jefferson County School Board member Donna Pike is apologizing for social media posts that a Birmingham activist described as racist during Tuesday's board meeting.

On Wednesday, Pike apologized for the Facebook posts and removed them from her page. "I didn't realize they would be perceived as they are," she told WVTM 13.

Birmingham activist Carlos Chaverts criticized Pike for a post she shared on Facebook on June 1 with an image of former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett but with the words “No! I’m not black! I’m Valerie Varret (sic) and I’m a Muslim, born in Iran!” Chaverts also showed an image of Pike's support of Roseanne Barr, whose show was recently canceled after Barr referred to Jarrett as an “ape” on Twitter.

Pike said she did share posts about supporting Roseanne.

Chaverts told board members they should seek Pike's resignation, and if they refused, then they were racist, too.
