BIRMINGHAM, AL — Jefferson County Court Clerk Taraneicha Carmichael was arrested May 10 and charged with theft. Carmichael is accused of voiding more than $38,000 in cash payments to the courts and keeping the money.

After a lengthy investigation, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office discovered that some of the thefts may have occurred as far back as 2019. The payments were made by the public for name changes, wills and motions for records, according to Sgt. Joni Money of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

"It does not appear that any of the thefts were for court costs or restitutions," Money said.
