Man Kills 2, Injures Officers Before Being Killed By Police
A man accused of killing two people in south Birmingham Sunday died in a shootout with police.
BIRMINGHAM, AL — A man was killed by police during a double homicide investigation that left four police officers injured. The man has been identified as Brian Timothy Dunne of Birmingham.
The incident began just after noon Sunday.
Officers were called to investigate a shooting at Brother Bryan Park in Birmingham where they found two gunshot victims. One of the victims, 34-year-old Brian Anthony Adkins, died at the scene and the second victim, 35-year-old Courtney Jan Ashley, was taken to UAB Hospital where she later died, according to Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department.

Mauldin said witnesses saw a man, later identified as Dunne, approach the victims and they began arguing. Dunne then shot both victims, police said.
"The victims were walking a dog at the time of the incident," Mauldin said. "Investigators have established the suspect and the female victim were acquaintances in a dating relationship."

Mauldin said Dunne fled the scene before police arrived. Officers were led to an apartment building in the 1800 block of 10th Ave. South, where Dunne and police exchanged gunfire.
Four officers were struck by gunfire and taken to UAB Hospital where they are all expected to recover from their injuries. The two officers who sustained serious injuries were 40-year-old Jeremy Dorr and 28-year-old Jacob Rouse.
Dunne was shot and killed by police.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation will take over the investigation into this case.
