BIRMINGHAM, AL — A vehicle pursuit led to a confrontation between a man and Birmingham police officers, resulting in the man being shot by the officers. The shooting occurred at Tienda Y Taqueria Mexican Restaurant in the 8500 block of 1st Avenue North.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department said officers began pursuing a truck that was driving on the wrong side of the road in the 9100 block of Parkway East, and the pursuit led them to the restaurant, where the driver of the truck reportedly ran inside.

After a confrontation which involved the man throwing glass bottles at the police officers, officers used stun guns on the man. Even after officers struck the man with their stun guns, a physical altercation ensued between the man and the officers, Fitzgerald said. At that point, officers fired their guns at the man, striking him multiple times.
