A Ramsey High School freshman is still in the intensive care unit at Children's of Alabama a week after collapsing during football workouts

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A Ramsey High School freshman is still in the intensive care unit at Children's of Alabama a week after collapsing during high school football workouts, according to a post on the J.H. Phillips Academy Parent Teacher Association Facebook page.

Jalen Hall, who will be a freshman at Ramsay High in the fall, passed out during a morning workout on June 5 and has been in ICU since, according to a GoFundMe account that is raising money for the teen's mother. Jalen recently finished his eighth-grade year at Phillips Academy.

Jalen was put into a medically-induced coma, according to the GoFundMe page. Hall's mother posted an update Saturday via the PTA Facebook page reporting that her son had regained some of his kidney functions.

In the June 9 update on the PTA Facebook page, Jalen's mother, Quita, said her son was still in critical condition:

"From Jalen's mom: My son has been in critical condition in the Children's ICU unit for 5 days now. We've received hundreds of calls & messages from ppl being concerned about him. He is a damn good kid & I see he is loved by MANY people. I've been a messed up bcuz he's my roll dog. We been rocking since I was 19. I feel torn apart without him. I say all that to say I truly, from the bottom of my heart appreciate every text, every post, every missed call. I haven't had to strength to get back to everyone, but plz blame my head & not my heart. I appreciate your concern & I will never forget it."

The PTA shared another update from Jalen's mom on Monday. She said her son was still on a breathing machine and constant dialysis:

"He's still in the ICU on constant dialysis & on a breathing machine. So far he hasn't been able to communicate or hardly stay awake until today. I had class from 7-4, but when I got back Jalen looked so much better. He's staying awake longer, he's understanding what's being said to him & he moved his legs during therapy. He's improving slowly, but surely. From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate all the calls, visits, prayers & financial help from EACH AND EVERY ONE OF Y'ALL. Plz keep praying for my baby. He's starting to come around. Just wanted to share some positive news..."
