Red Mountain Theatre Hosting Parkside Concert Series

Red Mountain Theatre has a new campus and has released its schedule for its concert series this summer.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Red Mountain Theatre will celebrate the soft opening of its new Arts Campus with a series of concerts titled “RMT’s Parkside Concert Series,” beginning May 13 and running through June 5.

Concerts will be held on the Main Stage or Discovery Theatre at Red Mountain Theatre’s new Arts Campus at 1600 3rd Avenue South.

  • Singer/songwriter, Jon Campbell and his wife Kristen, a Red Mountain Theatre veteran, May 13-15
  • Bobby Horton, performing Songs and Stories of the Civil War, June 3-5
  • Red Mountain alumna Audrey Cardwell, June 4-5
  • Birmingham native Cecil Washington Jr., June 4- 5.

“We’re thrilled about this lineup of shows and can’t wait to welcome all these talented performers into our new space,” Red Mountain Theatre Executive Director Keith Cromwell said. “We couldn’t think of a better way to open the Arts Campus than with a lineup full of Birmingham natives and Red Mountain Theatre alums.”

Jon Campbell, the lead singer for the Birmingham-based band The Negotiators has been writing and performing music for more than 30 years. Outside of The Negotiators, Campbell also travels with classic rock cover group The Black Jacket Symphony, serving as the lead singer when the band covers Led Zeppelin and The Eagles.

After growing up in the Red Mountain Theatre community, Kristen Campbell went on to perform in shows throughout the country, including the role of Mary Poppins in Red Mountain Theatre’s production of the show. A multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and music historian, Horton began creating 14 volumes of authentic Civil War tunes in 1984 that have since sold worldwide.

Widely recognized as one of the country’s leading authorities of music from the Civil War period, Horton has performed with the musical comedy trio Three On a String throughout the United States and Canada for more than 40 years. He has also produced and performed music scores for PBS films by Ken Burns - including “The Civil War”, and “Baseball,” two films for The A&E network, and 21 films for The National Park Service.

Cardwell is a Birmingham native and current New York City-based actress. Her return to Red Mountain Theatre will be an intimate evening featuring some of her favorite songs from the musical theatre canon and her career. Cardwell has been featured in several shows throughout her career, including the titular role in Pennsylvania Centre Stage’s production of Peter Pan.

The performances from Washington Jr. will feature a tribute to some of his favorite artists of the past and present. The songs selected will range from legendary artists such as Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke and Donny Hathaway to John Legend and more. A Birmingham native and musical theatre veteran, Washington Jr. holds a degree in theatre arts from Alabama State University, along with a certificate in film and television from the New York School of Dramatic Arts. The actor has performed in several shows throughout his career, including Ruined, Les Misérables and Memphis The Musical.

Showtimes will be 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. Thursday – Saturday. In accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, each show will be at 50 percent capacity and facemasks will be required.
