Shootout In North Birmingham Leaves 4 Injured, 1 In Custody

Three men and a woman were injured when gunfire erupted in the Collegeville community in north Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A shooting Monday afternoon in north Birmingham left four people wounded and one person in custody. Another suspected shooter is still at large, according to a WIAT broadcast.

Although previous reports said a person was shot on a MAX bus, officials with MAX Transit have clarified that one of the victims boarded the bus after being shot.

"The bus was traveling on 33rd Avenue and Shuttlesworth Drive when there was a shooting in the community. One of the persons who was shot boarded our bus," MAX Transit said in the release. "That person has been transported to UAB hospital. Our driver and the other passengers that were on the bus are safe."

Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said two groups of men engaged in a shootout in the 3300 block of Fred Shuttlesworth Drive. During the shooting, four people — three men and one woman — were injured.

One of the suspected shooters was chased down by police and apprehended. Another suspected shooter is still at large, according to police.
