AT&T Building Downtown To Be Transformed Into Apartments, Retail

One of Birmingham's tallest buildings will soon go under construction to be transformed into a mixed use property.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The third tallest building in the city, which has been vacant for months, will undergo a major renovation as it is transformed into apartments and retail space. The new owners of the former AT&T City Center building in downtown Birmingham are looking to begin construction on the tower soon.

A report by the Birmingham Business Journal said an Atlanta-based group, VCP City Center, purchased the building for $31 million, and the group plans a mixed-use development at the 700,000-square-foot building.

Jared Levitt with Tellus Partners - part of the VCP City Center group - said the majority of the transformation of the building will take place on the interior, as it is adapted from a long-term office use to mixed-use with its primary purpose being multifamily.

Levitt said they have put in for demolition permits and hope to start construction immediately. He said the city of Birmingham has been "great to work with."
