Trussville Dedicates Greenway At Civitan Park
Community members gather to celebrate the official opening of long overdue walking trails.
TRUSSVILLE, AL - When Trussville Mayor Buddy Choat cut the ribbon to dedicate the walking trails at the city’s Greenway project, it was the culmination of decades of transformation in the community. Mayor Choat welcomed a crowd of local citizens, veterans, community leaders and representatives from Civitan International to the ceremony at Civitan Bridge in the park.
“This has been a long time coming,” said Mayor Choat. “We’re about a month short of 20 years since this project was approved.”
The Greenway was first approved in 1998, but many of the park’s features are even older. The Civitan Bridge, which connects portions of the trail over the Cahaba, was built in the late 1880s and relocated to the park in 1984 as a gift to the city from members of the local Civitan club. In 1995, the Veterans Memorial was dedicated at the entrance to the park.

Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) administered the grant for the project which connects several smaller parks within the city—Veterans Park, Civitan Park and the Trussville Sports Complex—with a series of walking trails. ALDOT experienced multiple delays which pushed back the official opening date for the Greenway.
