UAB Professor Nominated For Book Award On Learner And User Experience Design
Yvonne Earnshaw's co-edited book received more than 30,000 hits within five months of being published online.

Earnshaw, along with Andrew A. Tawfik, Ph.D., assistant professor of instructional design and technology at the University of Memphis, Matthew Schmidt, Ph.D., associate professor at the University of Florida, and Isa Jahnke, Ph.D., an associate professor at the University of Missouri, wanted to have an open education resource to reach a broader audience in the emerging field of learner experience design. Their book is meant to be an introductory resource for researchers and practitioners. Forty authors contributed to the 16-chapter book focusing on methods, paradigms and theories of LX design, models and design frameworks for LX and LX design-in-use.
“Learning experience design is an emerging field that pulls from user experience, educational technology, psychology, instructional design and human-computer interaction,” Earnshaw said. “LXD goes beyond the usability of how a user or, in this case, a learner interacts with a device, which is the technical aspect; but we also need to look at the pedagogical and the socio-cultural aspects. We are focusing on designing learning experiences that are engaging and meaningful for the learner.”

AECT’s Design and Development Division will announce the winners during the 2021 International Convention held in Columbus, Ohio, from Nov. 2-6.
