Winter Storm Update: Power Outages, Road Hazards Possible

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for north Alabama and a watch for parts of central Alabama.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The chance for freezing rain, ice and some snow has become increasingly probable for Alabama, as the National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a winter storm warning for all of north Alabama and parts of west Alabama, and a watch for parts of central Alabama.

The NWS said power outages and icy road conditions are probable throughout the central and northern parts of the state Monday and Tuesday, as temperatures are not expected to get above freezing at any point Tuesday.

The warning and watch areas are illustrated in the NWS map (pink is where a warning has been issued, blue counties are under a winter storm watch).

The watch includes Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, Bibb and Perry Counties from Monday 9 a.m. to midnight. The NWS said to expect light freezing rain across west Alabama Sunday night then a winter storm with mixed precipitation across the western half of central Alabama Monday and Monday night.

The NWS predicts total ice accumulations of up to two tenths of an inch and sleet accumulations up to a quarter of an inch with locally higher amounts. Temperatures will fall well below freezing Monday night, the NWS says.

"Plan on slippery road conditions," the NWS in Birmingham said in a report Sunday. "The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute."
