Here are the top stories today in Huntsville:
- The Madison City Board of Education approved a bid for $6.89 million to build a new Special Education wing that will be at Bob Jones for the district’s east Madison feeder pattern. This bid also included a new marquee, improved lights through the school’s exterior, and improved landscaping. Construction will start at the beginning of this school year and is expected to be completed by next school year. (Madison Record)
- The Huntsville Police Department’s annual school supplies drive has started and will run through July 30. With the return to the classroom this year, the need for supplies for students that don’t have them is expected to be more than in recent years. Supplies can be dropped off at any of the department’s offices or the public safety complex. (WAAY)
- Calvin Jones of Big Swagg Chicken and Fish food truck is continuing what he started last year and is using some of the truck’s proceeds for a back-to-school drive. Jones opened his food truck during the pandemic and has enjoyed finding different ways to give back in the community. (WZDX)
- The Madison County Commission received a great result from a recent audit. The audit did not find any weaknesses or deficiencies in how the commission handles funds. (Yellowhammer News)
- Huntsville Hospital is hosting a vaccine clinic for Madison County students. The first dose will be given on July 12, and the second dose will follow on August 2, both from 1-3 p.m. at Madison County High School. Students must be at least 12, and if they are under 14 they will need parental consent. (Rocket City Mom)
