Here are the top five stories in Huntsville today:

  1. The Huntsville International Airport is on schedule to file for approval to be the first commercial airport licensed to land wheeled spacecraft, according to Lee Roop. The application’s approval will come from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and they will have 180 days to approve or reject. (AL.com)
  2. At the City Planning Commission meeting last night, residents of the Kirkwood Heights subdivision and developers are split on what should be done with a plot of land. The residents do not want the land split and have two shotgun-style homes built, as they think it will not keep the character of the neighborhood. It will also likely set a precedent to allow lots to be split in the future. Legal action could be taken by either side, depending on how the vote goes on July 14. (WHNT)
  3. Colten Seele, a sixth-grader at Hampton Cove Middle School, has a project currently featured in a virtual exhibit for the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Honors students in sixth-grade history are required to create a project to submit for National History Day. The theme this year is Breaking Barriers, and Seele studied the Navajo Code Talkers from World War II. (WAFF)
  4. The Arsenal and the Alabama National Guard 1103rd Sustainment Support Battalion worked together in their second annual Project Clean Sweep. They team up to dispose of millions of dollars of remnants that have accumulated from testing throughout the year. (WHNT)
  5. The Huntsville Madison County Chamber Chamber is getting ready for their 2021 Armed Forces Celebration. This will make 80 years that the Arsenal has celebrated. The first night will be Monday for a concert and fireworks at Big Spring, and there will be a community softball game of the Arsenal versus community leaders Tuesday at Toyota Field. The annual luncheon will be on August 4. (HSVChamber)
