Here the top five stories in Huntsville today:

  1. New research at UAH aims to create new generation software in forecasting and predicting potential space weather, which will likely be of high interest to the U.S. Space Force. The new research models would be used to help look at potential solar storms, which can be catastrophic. This type of research is critical, because even solar storms that do not endanger people can affect satellites, electrical grids, and communication equipment that will be important for the Space Force. 2. In the city council meeting last night, the western boundary was unanimously voted to be expanded with a new annexation in Limestone County. This pushed Huntsville’s city limits over I-65 for the first time ever. The new land is next to other land annexed by Huntsville and will be in the 5th district. (AL.com)
  3. There are new signs all over Huntsville and all the way down to Montgomery that are for “medical marijuana evaluations” by Green Health Docs. This organization is pre-registering individuals with symptoms that would make them eligible for medical marijuana. Registration for this will start by September 2022, and the state has not currently given any guidelines on pre-registration, so make sure to be in contact with your doctor first and foremost. (WAFF)
  4. The Huntsville Hospital COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic will be moving to the Fever and Flu Clinic on Governors Drive as of Tuesday. If you got your first dose at the John Hunt Park location, you will still go there for your second dose unless you are told otherwise. The location will officially close on July 9. (WHNT)
  5. There is a proposed change in federal standards of a metropolitan area that could move Decatur into being a “micropolitan area.” Decatur officials say this will not be a big issue, because although that would cause the city to lose some federal funding, most of their funding comes from the state. This change would affect 144 metro areas nationwide, including seven in Alabama. (Yahoo)
