ALDOT Begins I-65 Widening Project

The Department of Transportation began its project to widen Interstate 65 between Pelham and Alabaster this week.

PELHAM, AL - The much-anticipated road-widening project on Interstate 65 finally got under way this week, despite frigid temperatures and icy bridges.

According to a statement by the Alabama Department of Transportation, motorists will need to adapt and use extra caution while the construction progresses. The project will add lanes and widen bridges on I-65 from the State Route 3 Interchange (US 31 – Exit 238) in Alabaster to the County Road 52 Interchange (Exit 242) in Pelham, approximately three miles. More information will follow as the project progresses.

The contract was awarded to Dunn Construction and Wiregrass Construction as a Joint Venture for $67.5 million. The estimated completion time for this project is Fall 2020. Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area.
