Bulls Continue Quest For Playoffs With Win Over Roanoke

The Birmingham Bulls blew out the Roanoke Rail Yard Dogs Saturday night to inch closer to a playoff spot.

PELHAM, AL - The Birmingham Bulls pulled closer to a playoff spot in the Southern Professional Hockey League over the weekend. The Bulls entered the weekend just a point behind the Roanoke Rail Yard Dogs for the final playoff spot, and faced Roanoke at home Saturday night. The result was a 6-1 blowout by the Bulls.

Jacob Barber recorded a hat trick to lead the charge, in front of 2,546 at the Pelham Civic Complex on Saturday evening. The win catapulted the Bulls from ninth to seventh in the SPHL standings, one point clear of Roanoke and the Mississippi River Kings with eight games to play in the regular season.

Barber netted the only goal of the first period for Birmingham, but it only took 37 seconds into the second period to put the Bulls up 2-0. Goals by Taylor Dickin and Mike Davis gave Birmingham a 4-0 lead after two periods. Roanoke tried a comeback in the third as Phil Bronner connected on the power play at 7:33 of the third, but Barber completed his hat trick at the 12:52 mark and John Rey added a goal for good measure to complete the rout.
