Hotel In Shelby County Destroyed By Fire

One of Shelby County's oldest structures was destroyed by a fire over Memorial Day weekend.

SHELBY COUNTY, AL - A historic building in Shelby County was destroyed during Memorial Day weekend. The blaze occurred Saturday night at the Shelby Hotel.

The hotel, built during the Civil War, was reportedly the first in Alabama to have running water and electric lights. It has been a mainstay in Alabama's tourism and hospitality scene, and while the hotel survived fires in its long history, this one proved too much for the structure.

The Shelby Volunteer Fire Department posted on social media that the hotel was a complete loss.
