TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa has another hometown hero who will represent the United States in Tokyo after former Alabama Crimson Tide baseball pitcher David Robertson was named to the roster for Team USA ahead of the 2021 Summer Olympics in Toyko.

Robertson, 36, is currently a MLB free agent and one of 12 pitchers listed for Team USA, which is seeking its third Olympic gold medal and first since 2000. While he will be one of the elder statesmen on the squad, Robertson's experience on the world stage is likely to come in handy, as the right-hander was a member of U.S. national team that won the World Baseball Classic in 2017.

Team USA will open the Olympic baseball tournament against Israel on Friday, July 30.

Robertson played high school baseball at Central (Tuscaloosa) and Paul W. Bryant High before going on to make a name for himself with the Crimson Tide. He first broke into the big leagues in 2008 with the New York Yankees, who he would win a World Series with the following year, before going on to play stints with the Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies.

Off the field, the veteran pitcher is also known for his charity work through his nonprofit High Socks for Hope, which aids those impacted by natural disasters. Last month, Patch reported that Robertson's charity would be donating new furniture for residents of Willowbrook Trailer Park in Northport, after more than 100 residents were impacted by flooding.
