NORTHPORT, AL — Northport Power Equipment hosted renowned chainsaw sculptor Chad Gainey on Thursday and Friday as part of its spring open house, which saw the Husqvarna representative give demonstration of his craft while marketing some of his ornate works.

A former high school agriculture teacher based just north of Panama City, Florida, Gainey said he began to slowly develop his craft in 2011 as a way to enjoy weekends with his family at the local farmers market, but eventually parlayed his talent into a full-time job with one of the world's most recognizable brands.

He first started by carving Tikis out of scrap logs, before getting requests for other works of art.

"I was teaching high school at the time and just started playing around with carving with a chainsaw, making fish and pelicans, and it progressed from there," he told Patch on Friday. "Then I got hooked up with Husqvarna. It's kind of unheard of. I was very fortunate to get hooked up with the right people."

Gainey was tapped as a member of Husqvarna North America's inaugural H-Team in 2018, becoming part of a hand-picked group to represent the company.

Among his works on display were carvings of Bigfoot, an elephant, a turtle and a black bear, ranging in price from around $300 to $700. Gainey not only has the ability to take requests, but is also available for on-site stump carvings.
