NORTHPORT, AL — Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day. But teach a man to fish, and you'll give him something to do in Northport's Van de Graaff Park Saturday morning.

The park will host the Learn to Fish program Saturday, June 12 beginning 8 a.m., which provides adults and families with little-to-no fishing experience an opportunity to fish under the guidance and instruction of a skilled fishing mentor.

The program is made possible by The Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries’ Go Fish, Alabama! Program.

"The program is for adults and families interested in learning how to fish, socializing outdoors with friends and family, putting fish on the dinner table, or simply enjoying the thrill and challenge of the catch," a description of the course reads. "Each event is conducted in a safe, welcoming, and constructive environment."

Those participating will learn about fishing safety, equipment and tackle, fishing regulations and ethics, casting and cleaning fish.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says for select events, a $10 registration fee may apply. What's more, a freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 16-64 years old and children may not register without the accompanying registration of a supervising adult.

The Go Fish, Alabama! Program will provide participants with the equipment and tackle needed for the course. Participants are also asked to bring a cooler to take home their catch at the end of the day.
