NORTHPORT, AL — Following a weekend of devastating flooding brought on by Tropical Storm Claudette a week ago, the Northport City Council announced it will hold a special called meeting on Tuesday, July 6 at 1:30 p.m. to discuss the city's response.

A public notice for the meeting also mentioned it will focus especially on flooding issues on Kirkwood Drive and in the Brookside subdivision.

"We have had a request from citizens to field questions about flooding issues, and we are happy to attempt to address the questions and concerns," Northport City Administrator Glenda Webb told Patch on Monday. "An EMA representative will be present in order to provide updates as well
as advise on the process."

Thankfully, no one was injured or killed in the historic flood event in the overnight hours on June 20, but widespread damage was done to property and infrastructure, prompting the city to declare a state of emergency. The City of Northport also approved an allocation of up to $750,000 for immediate needs, which will come from the revenue generated by the city's 1-cent sales tax.

The hardest hit portion of the city could be seen at Willowbrook Trailer Park off of Hunter Creek Road, which saw more than 100 residents impacted by flooding. Of those, officials said roughly a quarter sought refuge at the Red Cross Shelter set up at Northport Baptist Church.

Apart from the toll taken on personal property, Northport is also facing numerous infrastructure repairs, including a complete washout of a stretch of Union Chapel Road. As Patch reported on Sunday, the road was closed 300 feet east of Barnes Settlement Road and 1400 feet west of Chapelwood Lane beginning Monday morning.

Union Chapel Road is expected to reopen on July 10.

Those with unaddressed flood damage or needs can call the Red Cross at (205) 523-5448, which is a number set aside for this specific disaster.
