NORTHPORT, AL ? The Northport Redevelopment Authority (NRDA) is encouraging Northport business owners and landlords to apply for the city's Facade Improvement Program as the application deadline approaches on Aug. 1.

NRDA Co-Chair Jaime Conger presented the Northport City Council with an update during Monday's regular meeting, along with asking council members to do what they can to get businesses in their respective districts to apply.

She went on to explain that no project is too small, as the first round of funding ? made possible by $350,000 set aside by the Council ? will provide up to $10,000 in base grant funding for facade improvements to businesses within the city limits without requiring a financial match from the applicant. What's more, the program will also match an additional $10,000 if the applicant puts up $10,000, bringing the possible total to $20,000 for each participating business.

As Patch previously reported, the money for the program was aside from the city's Northport First funds, which comes from revenue generated by Northport's 1 cent sales tax. Areas of focus for the program include: Rice Mine Road, McFarland Boulevard, Lurleen B. Wallace Boulevard, Bridge Street and Main Avenue.

According to the parameters set out by the NRDA, all proposed improvements must be visible from a public street and comply with all design standards outlined in the city's zoning ordinances.

Once applications are in, the NRDA will utilize a ranking system in the selection process. All applications will be reviewed and scored based on need, project impact, feasibility, budget and work plan.

Priority consideration will also be given to requests viewed as catalyst projects, which are defined as improvements that "stimulate desirable new development and private investment in the area," while helping to retain and strengthen existing businesses and development.

"If you've been waiting to make an improvement to your property, this would be the time," Conger said. "But if you have a smaller item you would like to take care of, let's say you have an awning that needs repaired, a sign that's been damaged by the weather lately, a fresh coat of paint for your business ... apply for the grant. Those funds can be used for that."

For those who are leasing their property or place of business, Conger said applications can be submitted with the approval of the landlord or property owner.

"I think that needs to be highlighted because I think that's holding some folks back from applying," she said.

Applications are available on the City of Northport website and at City Hall.
