TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tropical Storm Claudette officially formed in the Gulf of Mexico late Friday evening as the coast braces for landfall today. Here is our latest breakdown for impacts, along with timestamped updates throughout the day.

(11:30 p.m.) The City of Northport is experiencing the worst flooding impacts thus far as Claudette moves over the area. In response, Northport Baptist Church is opening as a Red Cross shelter for those affected by flooding.

(10 p.m.) Kayla Smith of WVUA 23 News was first to report and share images of a flood rescue of a man on Hunter Creek Road in Northport. This is a developing story.


Northport Councilwoman Christy Bobo also shared a list of road closures across the city as rain continues to fall across the area.


(7 p.m.): Severe weather is drenching Tuscaloosa as the National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Tuscaloosa County until 9:45 p.m. Tuscaloosa County EMA says radar estimates show 2-3 inches of rain has already fallen over portions of the area, with more than another inch possible. According to rain gauges at the Tuscaloosa National Airport, that part of the county had received 1.5 inches of rain as of early Saturday evening.

(8 a.m.): Heavy rain is already moving over West Alabama as Claudette moves north. While the threat of tornadoes is currently south of our coverage area, the National Weather Service does predict localized flooding along and south of U.S. Interstate 20.

Tropical Storm Claudette is the third named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season and made landfall early Saturday morning in southeastern Louisiana.
