Woman Claims Self-Defense After Man Shot At Skyland Ramada Inn

TUSCALOOSA, AL ? Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Commander Jack Kennedy gave an update this afternoon on a Tuesday morning shooting at a motel on Skyland Boulevard that resulted in one person being treated for injuries.

Kennedy said the initial call of the shooting came in at 8:22 a.m., with the Tuscaloosa Police Department and VCU investigators called to the Ramada Inn at 631 Skyland Boulevard East. He went on to say investigators believe there to be a serious component of self-defense in the shooting and no charges would be filed ? at least today ? against either subject involved in the altercation.

"A female subject on scene was located and cooperated and stated she had been in an argument with an acquaintance of her's, during which she ended up firing one round and shooting him once," Kennedy said. "That subject was transported to the hospital to be treated. His injuries are considered non-life-threatening."

He then said VCU investigators had been interviewing witnesses and going over evidence all morning, which led them to the preliminary conclusion of self-defense.

"That may change in the future as we continue the investigation further and may even result in this case being presented to a grand jury for evaluation," Kennedy said. "But I would like to stress this appears to be an isolated incident. It wasn't related to the hotel at large or the surrounding area."
