NORTHPORT, AL — The latest major change is beginning to take shape during coach Adam Winegarden's first year at Tuscaloosa County High School. Heavy machinery can be seen on the field at Wildcat Stadium, digging up earth to make way for a brand new turf field.

Here's a rendering of the new turf field, which will be ready for the Wildcats in the 2021 season.

"They’ve broke ground on the turf field and digging out a ton of dirt right now," Winegarden told Patch on Tuesday. "That’s progress and our community is excited for what that will mean. It will provide a great opportunity [for the players]. Besides extreme weather, we should never miss a day of work and it's going to benefit a lot of people, not just football. A lot of other people are going to be able to use it."

The Tuscaloosa County Board of Education approved the turf installation in April, along with other projects, such as facility upgrades for Northside High School baseball and a new activity building for Taylorville Primary School, among other investments.

The addition is just one of several large-scale changes that started with the hiring of a new coach and also included renovations to the W.G. Sullivan Field House that were shown off in early May, as Patch previously reported.

What's more, the new turf playing surface will be complimented by another feature — a brick Legacy Walk leading from the field house to the field. Bricks can feature the names of TCHS alumni, businesses or families, along with other bricks mixed in from the old TCHS building that open in 1926.

Click here to purchase a brick during its pre-sale, which runs through July 1.
