VHPD Officer Dies From Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

A Vestavia Hills police officer has died after a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday morning.

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL — A Vestavia Hills police officer has died after a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday morning, according to Vestavia Voice. The officer was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment, where he later died.

VHPD said the incident occurred at 11:30 a.m. at the Shoppes at City Hall, but were unable to provide any further details. The parking lot of the shopping center was closed as police continued to investigate.

VHPD has asked in a statement that the community keep the officer's family and the department as a whole in its thoughts and prayers.
