Vestavia Hills Seniors Meet Up for Monday Night Dancing

Every Monday, a group of seniors gather at the Vestavia Hills Senior Citizen Lodge to cut loose for a while.

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL — The senior citizens of Vestavia Hills won't let anyone tell them they're too old to dance. A group of seniors gather every Monday at the Vestavia Hills Senior Citizen Lodge to dance the night away.

A tradition that was started eight years ago by a volunteer group, the Monday Night Dance Group consists of two hours of dancing to music of all styles, except for square dancing, according to group chairperson Zella Listerman.

"Every Monday is a little different," Listerman said. "We never know what's going to happen until we get there."

The group likes to make it personal as well — some nights, they'll celebrate a birthday or two.

"Some of our members are over 90," Listerman said. "So we like to honor them, or all the birthdays in September in one night, things like that."

The group dances to music played by a rotating slate of bands that can play anything from a waltz to different kinds of line dances. Light refreshments are offered, and a few times a year, full course seated dinners are organized for participants.

Couples and single dancers over the age of 55 are welcome. Admission is $5 at the door. The group meets every Monday night from 7 to 9 p.m.
