Vestavia May Raise Taxes To Fund Infrastructure Push

The Vestavia City Council may raise sales and lodging taxes to fund an infrastructure push.

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL - The Vestavia Hills City Council set the priorities for planning its Community Spaces Plan and set the price tag for the project at $58 million. The city is considering an increase in the sales and use tax, as well as the city's lodging tax to finance the plan.

According to a report by the Vestavia Voice, the proposed 1 percent increase in sales tax would generate approximately $3.9 million in additional revenue for the city. An increase in the city's share of the lodging tax rate from 3 percent to 6 percent for a total collection of 14 percent would generate an additional $178,000 in revenue.

  • Field and facilities upgrades to Wald Park: $15.4 million

  • Refinance purchase of building in Gold's Gym space: $8.9 million
  • Complete overhaul of Cahaba Heights ballfields: $7.4 million
  • Redesign of New Merkel House: $500,000
  • Widening Crosshaven Drive: $4.6 million
  • City sidewalk projects: $2.5 million
  • Repaving roads: $2.2 million
  • Public stormwater pipe replacements: $550,000

On Thursday, March 22, a resolution of intent may be presented to the council, which would allow it to call for a public forum on April 3. The council would then vote on the tax rate increases on April 9.
