ARIZONA — The vaccine rollout in Arizona, as with much of the country, has faced its fair share of hurdles that have left residents feeling frustrated.

Still, more and more people are getting shots daily and the state administered 1,608,558 doses of the life-saving vaccine to date. Approximately 465,459 Arizonans are fully vaccinated as of Wednesday. As vaccine supply increases, it’s not too far off in the future when the vaccine will be available to the general public.

The vaccine is being administered at state-run mass vaccination sites in the Phoenix-metro area and in Tucson, as well as at smaller countywide sites. Pharmacies are also beginning to vaccinate eligible residents. CVS began rolling out its vaccination program in Arizona this week.

The state has also pledged to ensure equity in vaccine distribution, with Arizona Department of Health Services spokesperson telling the Arizona Republic it will become "increasingly important" to distribute the vaccine widely when the supply is available.

"It will become increasingly important when increased vaccine supply allows ADHS and county public health partners, who are the local allocators for COVID-19 vaccine in their communities, to move from groups prioritized largely by professions to more of the general public," he told the newspaper in a written statement.

Who Can Get Vaccinated

As of Wednesday, the majority of Arizona's 15 counties are vaccinating those who meet the following requirements:

  • Adults over the age of 65
  • Educators
  • First responders

Vaccine eligibility varies by county, but Maricopa and Pima Counties are both in prioritized Phase 1b and have recently lowered the age threshold to 65.

Phase 1c, which includes adults with pre-existing conditions, is expected to begin in March or April as the vaccine becomes more widely available.

Where To Get Vaccinated

Appointments at all four state-run sites (Phoenix Municipal Stadium, State Farm Stadium, Chandler-Gilbert Community College and the University of Arizona Tucson campus) can be made online through ADHS.

Anyone without access to a computer or who needs additional assistance can call (602) 542-1000 or (844) 542-8201 for help.

All state site appointments are currently booked but more will be made available soon.

Each Arizona county has its own online registration process, including Maricopa and Pima Counties.

For a full list of vaccination sites, ADHS has a tool on its website that will allow residents to find a vaccine nearby, including at community health centers and participating pharmacies.
