Teacher In Mexican Jail After Bringing Gun To Country On Accident

More than $17,000 has been raised for an attorney for Kayria Rosales, but the Red Mountain High School teacher has still not seen a judge.

MESA, AZ — A Phoenix-area high school teacher is still in a Mexican jail after family members said she accidentally brought a gun into the country during a spring break trip.

Kayria Rosales, a science teacher at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, is one of hundreds of people who end up imprisoned south of the border over situations similar to this, 12-News, an NBC affiliate in Phoenix reported.

She has been detained for more than three weeks, and just recently came to an agreement with prosecutors in the country on a deal that would lead to her release, the news station reported. Family members have said the conditions of the jail she is in are horrid.

The agreement on her release comes with an additional obstacle, however: getting the case in front of a judge. Until then, Rosales will stay in the Mexican jail.

“The problem is getting in front of a judge,” a family member told 12-News.

Rosales has received a significant amount of support since the ordeal unfolded. A GoFundMe to hire an attorney raised more than $17,000, and the one the family hired was able to make the deal with prosecutors for her to come home.

“We love Ms. Rosales,” Kimberly Griffin, a Red Mountain High parent, wrote on GoFundMe while making a donation. “She is one of the best teachers two of my boys have had. We have been in constant prayer for her mind and her safety.”

Audra Rosales Ward, the family member who created the GoFundMe, said Rosales has been moved to a new jail cell, but was still waiting to see a judge as of Tuesday.

“She is in worst (sic) conditions in this cell and the new group is not nice to her,” Rosales Ward said in a GoFundMe update.
