Bodies Of 2 Children Found, 1 Missing In Arizona Floodwaters

At least six other people were rescued Friday after a car became stuck in Tonto Creek.

GILA COUNTY, AZ — The body of two children have been recovered and one other child remains missing after a car got stuck in a creek in Arizona amid flash flooding in the area, according to officials and news reports.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a car being stuck in Tonto Creek around 4:11 p.m. on Friday. At least one adult and four children were rescued by helicopters from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The five people rescued had found themselves on an island, officials said. Another adult was rescued from the shore.

Multiple agencies were assisting to rescue the remaining three children, the sheriff's office said.

On Saturday morning, the body of a 5-year-old child was recovered, ABC-15 reported. The sheriff's office said the child was found around 8:45 a.m. A second child's body was recovered around 11:14 a.m. local time.

The sheriff's office said the rescue operation took place near Tonto Basin.

Gila County Undersheriff Mike Johnson told CNN the children and two adults were in the car when it was overtaken by floodwaters.

CNN reported a flood warning was in effect for Gila County until 8:45 p.m. on Friday.
