Construction To Repair 7th Street Bridge Set To Begin In Phoenix

A fire on Feb. 28 caused significant damage to the 7th Street Bridge over the Salt River. Construction to repair the bridge will begin on Monday, March 15. The bridge will remain closed for approximately six months.

Today, infrastructure is being installed at the river bottom, underneath the bridge, to support the reconstruction work and allow construction access.

Because of the damage caused by the fire, and upon extensive structural analysis, it was determined that approximately 35% of the bridge needs to be removed and rebuilt.

The City of Phoenix is committed to reopening the bridge as safely and quickly as possible and asks for your patience as work continues. Please take an alternate route when possible and allow extra time when traveling through this area. The area is an active construction zone -- always slow down in work zones to keep both yourself and crews safe.

Traffic Impacts

The 7th Street Bridge over the Salt River remains closed. Restrictions are in place on 7th Street between Broadway Road and the I-17.

Motorists are encouraged to use 7th Avenue or 16th Street as alternative routes. Nearby travel restrictions are detailed below. Follow @StreetsPHX on Twitter for updates.

North of the bridge:

  • Hard closure south of University Drive.
  • Lane restrictions from I-17 to University Drive.

South of the bridge:

  • Hard closure north of Victory Street.
  • Soft closure at Elwood Street – local traffic only.

Bus Service Impacts

  • Phoenix Bus Route 7 (7th Street) is on detour between I-17 and Broadway Road.
  • The last bus stops before the detour are Mohave Street and Broadway Road.
  • Riders can check out detour details at valleymetro.org/rider-alerts.

Parks, Preserves and Trails Impacts

  • The 7th Street Trailhead is temporarily closed and access to trails under the 7th Street bridge is restricted.
  • The trailheads at 16th Street and Central Avenue are open, and hikers are able to travel west of 16th Street and east of Central Avenue, but will be required to turn around before reaching the area near the 7th Street bridge.
