Fortune 500: These Phoenix Companies Make 2021 List

PHOENIX, AZ — Fortune Magazine on Wednesday released its annual list of the 500 top companies in America, and five of those companies are based in Phoenix.

This year marks the 67th edition of the Fortune 500, which ranks companies by total annual revenue. Combined, the corporations on this year’s list generated $13.8 trillion in revenue last fiscal year, accounting for about two-thirds of the total U.S. gross domestic product.

The 500 companies employ about 29.1 million people worldwide.

Here are the companies in Phoenix that made this year’s Fortune 500 list:

• 168: Avnet: $17.634 billion
• 215: Freeport-McMoRan: $14.198 billion
• 297: Republic Services: $10.153 billion
• 390: Magellan Health: $7.501 billion
• 437: Sprouts Farmers Market: $6.469 billion

The top 10 companies on this year’s list are:

1. Walmart
2. Amazon
3. Apple
4. CVS Health
5. UnitedHealth Group
6. Berkshire Hathaway
7. McKesson
8. Amerisource Bergen
9. Alphabet
10. Exxon Mobil

This is the ninth year Walmart has topped the list of Fortune 500 companies.

Like many things, the coronavirus pandemic took a mostly negative toll on this year’s Fortune 500. As the world locked down, hitting pause on the global economy, the overall profits of Fortune 500 companies dropped from $1.24 trillion to $859 billion. More than 70 percent of Fortune 500 sectors saw a decline in profits.

A few sectors saw increases, the list notes, including technology and household products, the latter of which reported a 106 percent increase in profits.

Women hit some big milestones on this year’s list. The number of women running businesses on the Fortune 500 hit an all-time record of 41; and, for the first time ever, two Black women are running Fortune 500 businesses (Roz Brewer of No. 16 Walgreens Boots Alliance and Thasunda Brown Duckett of No. 79 TIAA).
