Here's Where Phoenix's Public Transportation System Ranks

A new report ranked major cities on their public transportation system. See where Phoenix finished.

Phoenix, AZ — Taking the train or bus to work in the morning can be a daunting task for many, but it looks like commuters have a better or worse experience depending on their location in the country.

WalletHub, the personal finance site, examined 100 cities in the U.S. across 17 key metrics to determine which urban areas had the best public transportation systems. The relevant metrics included shortest average commute time, fewest annual hours spent in congestion, and public transit injuries per passenger miles traveled.

Our city ranked 55 overall in public transportation. Phoenix also finished 26 in "accessibility and convenience," 61 in "safety and reliability," and 67 in "public transit resources."

Phoenix finished in the middle of the pack for major cities across the country, but there is no better-known public transportation system than the one in New York City, which has over 665 mainland track miles and transports over 1.75 billion passengers each year, according to the study.

NYC might have the rest of the country beat on size, but Seattle's public transportation system took home the top spot in the U.S.

Here are the overall top 10:

  1. Seattle, WA: 77.97
  2. Boston, MA: 77.84
  3. San Francisco, CA: 75.21
  4. Washington D.C.: 71.23
  5. Madison, WI: 71.06
  6. Jersey City, NJ: 69.05
  7. New York, NY: 68.87
  8. Reno, NV: 68.13
  9. Honolulu, HI: 67.85
  10. Portland, OR: 66.82

San Francisco finished with the top overall ranking in the accessibility and convenience ranking, whereas Madison, Wisconsin had the No. 1 spot in safety and reliability, and Reno, Nevada, finished No.1 in the public transit resources ranking.

Indianapolis finished on the other end of the spectrum, with the very worst public transportation system in the U.S.
