ICYMI: Meteor Explosion Likely Cause Of Arizona Boom: YCSO

Residents heard the massive boom, thinking initially it was an earthquake, and 69 sightings were reported to the American Meteor Society.

YAVAPAI COUNTY, AZ — The massive boom heard by northern Arizona residents Sunday was most likely caused by a meteor explosion, according to a social media post by the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office. The blast happened around 7:20 a.m. Sunday.

Many residents initially believed the explosion to be an earthquake.

Deputies checked their patrol areas looking for a source, and the sheriff's office reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration and military units for an answer, but were not able to confirm anything through those agencies.
