Part Of I-10 Will Be Closed This Weekend In Phoenix

PHOENIX, AZ – As construction workers pave Interstate 10 westbound in the area of the South Mountain Freeway interchange, westbound I-10 will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13 until 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, between 35th and 67th avenues. Not only that, both “Stack” interchange ramps from I-17 to westbound I-10 will be closed. The 27th Avenue I-10 on-ramp is also closed this weekend.

Long delays are expected at 35th Avenue, as the first westbound exit west of I-17. Alternatively, drivers can exit I-10 before I-17, then head south to Van Buren Street or north to McDowell Road, then head west to get onto I-10 west of the closure.

There will also be rerouting required this weekend for drivers headed west on the I-10 going past the Phoenix area, who “should consider taking Interstate 8 west at Casa Grande and State Route 85 north from Gila Bend to re-enter I-10 in Buckeye. Drivers on southbound I-17 planning to drive west of Phoenix should consider Loop 101 or Loop 303 to connect with I-10,” according to an ADOT news release. Additional travel restrictions will occur west of downtown Phoenix on I-10 during September and October weekends.

The South Mountain Freeway, spanning 22 miles, is slated for completion next year, though some lanes are expected to be operational before full freeway completion. The voter-approved-in-1985 and -2004 freeway will complete the Phoenix metro valley’s Loop 101 and Loop 202 freeway system, linking the West and East valleys. It will also give drivers an additional route choice when traveling through downtown Phoenix, besides using I-10.
