On March 14, head to the DiGiorno’s account between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. and reply to its Pi Day tweet explaining “what makes your favorite pizza.” Remember to add the hashtags #sweepstakes and #NationalPiDay. You might have heard of Pi Day, but can you explain the mathematical concept?

Pi is an “irrational number” used to express the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The distinction of irrational means that the number has a decimal with no end or repeating number.

Typing the symbol for Pi into a calculator and pressing enter will give you the result of 3.141592654, not because this value is exact but because the calculator’s screen is limited to 10 digits.

Pi Day as a holiday wasn’t made official until 2009, when the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution designating March 14 as “National Pi Day” to encourage schools to observe the day with a special focus on math.
