TEMPE, AZ — Tempe Mayor Corey Woods is joining a list of Arizona mayors in celebrating Earth Day AZ, a collaboration celebrating ways that Arizona's cities can become more sustainable in the future.

Woods joins mayors from El Mirage, Flagstaff, Fountain Hills, Mesa, Oro Valley, Peoria, Phoenix, Sedona and Tucson in the project.

The movement, which is in partnership with Arizona State University's Sustainable Cities Network, aims to show the public that we all have a role to play in ensuring the planet's health going forward, the city said.

“Celebrating this day is so important,” Woods said. “It is proof that we can make a positive global impact when we work together locally. It is also a great way to highlight the work we do year-round to make an impact on reducing carbon emissions.”

Earth Day has been celebrated in America each year since 1970, with the collective of mayors asking that the public adopt sustainable practices, such as:

  • Not leaving water running when in use
  • Carpooling or using public transportation when possible
  • Using reusable water bottles and coffee mugs
  • Taking reusable shopping bags to the grocery store
  • Rising out food cans before placing them in a recycling bin
  • Putting all junk mail and magazines in recycling, not trash
  • Using energy-efficient LED bulbs
  • Buying recycled paper for your home and office
