Tempe’s STEP program allows transportation staff to work with neighborhoods to develop efficient traffic calming solutions on local streets, that create a safe, efficient, accessible and balanced transportation system.
Traffic calming techniques may include speed humps, chicanes, traffic circles, medians and more. These types of solutions are typically more affordable, require less project development time and enhance Tempe’s transit, bicycle and pedestrian system.
To help guide the process, Tempe created a stakeholder advisory group, comprised of residents, an ASU representative and Tempe transportation staff. The advisory group will ensure all stakeholders have a voice in the manual’s development.
The STEP manual update is aligned with Tempe’s Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious-injury crashes. Investing in neighborhood traffic calming was identified as a safety strategy in the Vision Zero Action Plan and the update to the STEP manual will further this effort.
