CA Fires 2020: 1.38M Acres Burn In 700 Fires In Less Than 2 Weeks
A look at the latest stats related to the major fires burning across California. Plus, see a map of the fire locations as of Aug. 28.
CALIFORNIA — More than a week since a firestorm took hold over the Golden State, thousands of firefighters continue to battle flames across hundreds of thousands of acres. As of Friday, more than 14,600 firefighters were battling more than two dozen fires considered "major," along with hundreds of smaller blazes.
Many of the fires were initially sparked by lightning last week — and lighting continues to strike parts of the Bay Area, though weather conditions were improving, according to Cal Fire.
"Firefighters will continue to monitor for additional lightning strike wildfires," Cal Fire said in its Friday breifing. "Firefighters will be performing firing operations to strengthen containment lines and burn out islands of unburned vegetation within the fire's perimeters. Smoke columns will be visible on some fires today."
