CA Fires Latest: Hundreds Of Blazes Balloon In The Golden State

Here's the latest stats we have related to wildfires burning in California.

CALIFORNIA — With some 10,000 lightning strikes in the last few days alone, a record heat wave and humid weather across the state, California wildfires continue to rage out of control. And while crews are making progress on some of the larger fires, others are growing in size by the thousands of acres each hour.

By Wednesday afternoon, there were 23 fires considered "major," including the CZU August Lightning Complex, the LNU Lightning Complex and the Carmel Fire — all of which had zero containment as of Wednesday afternoon, according to Gov. Gavin Newsom. There are more than 340 other smaller fires burning.

"There's no question that while last year we experienced some... fires... the total number of fires last year was substantially lower than the activity we're experiencing this year," Newsom said during his news briefing.
