California Ghost Town And Mining Operation Up For Sale
Cerro Gordo, a historic ghost town, was named by Mexican miners who went to the area looking for silver in the 19th century.
LONE PINE, CA -- A historic ghost town in California was listed for sale this month. Cerro Gordo, located about four hours away from the city of Los Angeles, is 300 acres and home to more than 20 historic buildings. The town, named "Fat Hill," was named after Mexican miners who came to the area in the 19th century in search for silver, according to the organization that hosts tours in the area.
"A businessman named Mortimer Belshaw is the man who really put the town on the map, though. In 1868, he brought the first batch of silver to Los Angeles and later built a toll road to supply the burgeoning industry. Within a year, the mine was the largest producer of silver and lead in California," according to an article by Mental Floss.
Listed for $925,000, the property is currently owned by a family, but they're looking for new owners with the hope they will preserve the historic site, Mental Floss reported.
